Custom Art Commissions: From Digital Rendering to Installation

Custom art commissions give interior designers the flexibility to specify artwork around a project’s palette, architecture, and material selections. At The KM Group, we produce originals in-house and develop bespoke commissions with partner artists for high-end residential and commercial interiors. Each commission follows a collaborative process, with opportunities to review the design and refine the artwork as it develops.

From the first reference images to final placement, here’s how we bring custom artwork into your design process.

Step 1: Define the Design Direction

We begin with your mood boards, room photographs or elevations, dimensions, and client preferences. Fabric swatches and finish samples help communicate the palette and textures you want to complement. Together, we establish the artwork’s scale, orientation, materials, composition, and intended placement, along with the production timeline. These details guide whether the commission is produced in-house or developed with a partner artist.

Step 2: Develop and Refine the Digital Rendering

Before production begins, we develop a digital rendering for review. This allows you and your client to explore the composition, request changes, and visualize the artwork within the space. Adjustments might include the proportions of an element, the balance of colors, or the arrangement of forms. The approved rendering establishes the creative direction, while the selected materials and techniques give the finished artwork its physical texture and character.

Step 3: Review the Artwork During Production

Once the design and specifications are approved, production begins. We share progress updates and invite feedback as the artwork takes shape. You can request adjustments to details such as the scale of a flower, the prominence of a color, or the balance of a composition. We coordinate those refinements with the studio or artist, taking the medium and stage of production into account. You review and approve the finished artwork before delivery.

Step 4: Coordinate Delivery and Installation

With final approval in place, we arrange any required framing, packaging, and delivery. Our team handles delivery and installation for local projects. For projects outside our local service area, we coordinate insured shipping and installation through service providers. Access requirements and placement details are considered in advance so the artwork’s dimensions, handling, and installation align with the property and your project schedule.

What to Prepare for Your Custom Art Commission

A clear brief gives us a strong starting point. Helpful materials include:

  • Room photographs, elevations, wall dimensions, and nearby furniture measurements.
  • Palette references, fabric or finish samples, and notes on preferred materials and composition.
  • Client feedback, the desired installation date, and any delivery or building-access requirements.

You don’t need every detail finalized to begin the conversation. Share what you have, and we’ll help identify the remaining specifications needed to move your commission forward.
